Recording you voice demo

By |November 25th, 2016|

Over the past month or so, we’ve gone over what voice acting is, the styles of voice acting, and how to practice. Now it’s time to put you to the test. This means we are going to begin work on your first voice demo!

You’ll need some equipment:

Computer
Audio editing software
Microphone
Audio Interface (not needed if using a USB microphone)
Somewhere quiet

Pretty much any PC or Mac will run basic audio editing software. The go-to free solution is Audacity. It’s pretty straightforward but it will still come with a bit of a learning curve if you’ve never worked with a DAW (digital audio workstation). Also if you intend on doing voice work from home, you will probably want […]

Developing your talent as a voice actor.

By |November 18th, 2016|

Nice to see you again. This is the part of the story where you decide your path, or at least, your focus. If you aren’t sure where to begin; do two things. Read the post a few weeks back on the different styles of voice acting out there, and, listen to your heart. You probably heard something great once, and it inspired you to go down this road. It could have been Morgan Freeman’s perfect blend of Southern accent and wonderous pipes, Mark Hamill’s insane portrayal of the Joker, or even just a really natural and transparent delivery that left you feeling refreshed- *ahem* ;).

Now here is how to practice voice acting.

First you’ll need to find a script. If […]

Learn to read. Better.

By |November 4th, 2016|

If you haven’t read our previous two blog posts on becoming a voice actor, I suggest you do so before reading the rest of this article.

Now that you are familiar with the various styles of voice acting, it’s time to “get good”, and the first step is learning to read aloud, flawlessly.

There are no two ways about it, you’re going to have to put in the time, and practice. A lot.

The first step, is learning how to read. If you’ve made it this far, you’re most of the way there. Now try this: read everything from the beginning of this article, aloud, at a natural pace.

Done? Did you stumble? Did you hesitate anywhere? If so, do it again. And […]

First steps towards making your first voice demo

By |October 28th, 2016|

So you want to be a voice actor huh? Great, let’s hear your voice demo! Oh, you don’t have one? That would normally be a problem, but we’re going to take the first steps to fix that today.

What kind of work would you like to do? This should help you decide where you will focus most of your effort, and preparation when creating your first voice demo. Many of the below styles have some sort of overlap with others. Also this is just some of the most common styles you will come across, or at least I have. From easiest to hardest (in my opinion), here are the general styles of voice over that you hear:

Phone system or […]

Voice acting and creating a voice demo

By |October 21st, 2016|

Voice acting is a beautiful art. Would you like to be a General in the military? How about an evil temptress from the underworld? Of course, nothing is stopping you from also being a plucky grade-schooler with a passion for hula hooping. Get good enough and you could even be Robert Downey Jr. or Angelina Jolie if you start dubbing movies! All you need is imagination, and determination… and a voice demo.

A bit about myself before we get started.

I was a part-time broadcaster for 10 years, 5 on CBC TV and Radio (Canadian BBC kind of). A sound engineer as well during the past 9 years. A full time producer, specializing in dubbing since 2012, working with Bad Words […]

By |October 13th, 2016|

Animation Brewery and Bad Words Lab’s recording studio got together to help spread the good word about Biosand filters.

Click here to check it out. Best experience is on mobile, as these devices are more prominent in developing countries.

If you haven’t heard of them, Biosand filters are a wonderful invention that can help the lives of not millions, but HUNDREDS of millions. These many people are without clean drinking water or sanitation, and as a result, countless lives are lost to diseases.

We had the task of bringing a voice to their animation, in several languages and accents. To name a few: English and French in an African accent, as well as South East Asian, to even Creole, where a formal spelling of certain words […]

By |November 6th, 2014|

Want to know more about Urbance, an upcoming animated series from Montreal animation studio, Steambot? Well lucky for you, Helene Rousse from TotalCasting.ca and I had the chance to sit down and talk with the new series’ creators. This was a great day for us here at Bad Words Lab. We love looking at animated series that promise to change the way people think. And this was certainly exceptional.

With less than 48 hours to go on their Kickstarter campaign, Helene Rousse and I sit down with Joel and Sébastien from Steambot Animation Studios to discuss their “just now”-funded campaign for Urbance. My excitement to learn more about their upcoming creation is compounded by the excitement supercharged in their office. […]
